“Make Shift - do what one wants to do in spite of not having ideal conditions”
Among Westerners the Indonesian island Bali is famous for its wonderful culture and exotic beauty. However for many local children life is rough and difficult.
In an orphanage in Gianyar almost 200 children between 7 and 18 years old are living in dreadful conditions. The rooms are filthy and humid. The sanitary is very unhygienic due to a open sewer system. Basic needs as food and medical care are hardly met.
Moreover there is minimal support of caretakers and the children have to look after each other.
Despite the awful living conditions these orphaned children are proud and dignified to build up their own future. ‘Make Shift’ is all about showing their strength. By putting them in the spotlight as heros it was the aim to empower them.
The production of a photoserie like ‘Make shift’ is as a fashion photoshoot in the actual places where the children are living.
